Keys to the Game by Tim Avery
With the NFL regular season now upon us, many television analysts will begin the pre-game show with the “Keys to the Game.” They want us to understand from opening kick-off, the elements that are likely to result in a team’s success. Similarly, if you are driving and discover that your 20/20 eyesight has eroded due to aging, you will understand the impact that an accurate, corrective prescription can have. Suddenly, the road signs that have been blurry and hard to define become clear. Your confidence behind the wheel increases, because your vision has gained clarity. Clarity is a “key to the game.”
The clarity principle is similar in virtually any aspect of leadership, the church included. When undertaking any new endeavor, we do so understanding that clarity is key. Whatever new ministry initiative is being unveiled, the likelihood of it being well-received, understood, and embraced increases exponentially if it is abundantly clear to the audience.
Developing clarity should be considered a non-negotiable when it comes to the implementation of any major stewardship emphasis in the church, particularly a capital stewardship campaign. We’ve all heard Proverbs 29:18 quoted frequently in summary fashion over the years – “Without vision the people perish.” Eugene Peterson does an incredible job with that verse in The Message, stating it like this, “If people can't see what God is doing, they stumble all over themselves; But when they attend to what he reveals, they are most blessed.”
As leaders in the church, we want to do anything to help our people arrive in the place that could be described as being “most blessed,” right? No question! How do they become most blessed? By “attending to what he reveals.” In other words, “what he reveals” is that preferred future picture; that vision for the church that describes God’s intended purposes moving forward! When people gain clarity about the things that are important to God, His vision, His plans, and His purposes, they can then “attend to” what He has revealed. Instead of simply stumbling around, doing church each week, then moving on to the reality of life, they are suddenly on mission with God! They can see what He is doing. They have gained clarity about His plans and understanding how they fit into that future picture! A leader’s responsibility includes then, helping people see what God is doing.
ISS “gets” the Keys to the Game and understands how important clarity is to the campaign process. To that end, we have a clear 7-Step Plan that effectively assists pastors in helping their church “see what God is doing.” Over the next few weeks, we will look at each step independently, highlighting the value of all seven.
The starting place for Capital Campaign Keys to the Game is…Environmental Assessment. As followers of Christ, we know that God has created us differently. No two people share the same personality, dreams for the future, fingerprints, talents, or interests. The same is true for the church. While many may look similar from the outside, they each have a unique make-up, leadership team, and purpose in God’s redemptive plan. For a capital campaign to be effective and fulfilling, that unique make-up must be understood and addressed within the campaign plan.
It’s been said that one of the first responsibilities of the leader is to define reality. The ISS leader who consults with your church will do just that. ISS will help you define the reality of your church’s ministry by leading through the significant first step of Environmental Assessment. The result? Events, activities, and a journey of faith that are altogether consistent with who God has created your church to be. A capital campaign should be a rich and exciting experience for the church as they see what God is doing, attend to what He reveals, and then experience His blessing!
