Wouldn’t it be incredible if we could just speak about the vision and people would run forward with piles of money to fund it immediately?

It won’t happen that way. It takes W-O-R-K. I Chronicles 28 & 29 provide an example for raising big-time money to build a church. In verses 10 and 20 of Chapter 28, David shares with Solomon the same charge: “Do the work.”

Here’s why it takes work to fund major vision:

1. People will have questions. Those questions must be answered. The number one barrier to maximum giving is unanswered questions. Answering questions will consume great amounts of time and energy. You will have to answer questions over and over and over and over – many of them will be repetitive. It might require you to go to where they are – to their business or with them as they travel.
2. People are struggling with money. The majority of people in your church are struggling to pay for the needs of daily life. They need equipped to win with their money before they can help fund the vision.
3. You must have clear vision. As the leader, you must be able to cast a clear and compelling vision that moves people. After all, without vision the people will perish.
4. It will require sacrificial gifts. To accomplish huge vision will require huge money. This means that people will not be giving from their discretionary and available money. Instead, they will be sacrificing substantial items of net worth – land, cars, motorcycles, stock, businesses, houses, etc. They did this in the Bible – Acts 4:34.
5. Money is the #1 competitor for people’s hearts. We’ve all delivered the Matthew 6:19-21;24 messages. You cannot serve both God and money. Your heart is connected to your treasure. What’s more, you’ve seen it impact marriages, family relationships, physical and spiritual health. When you embark on a journey to fund the next step toward the vision God has given you, you will encounter resistance because you are literally challenging an idol in many people’s lives!
6. They will follow your lead. If you attempt to “wander” or “bluff” or attempt to avoid the “do the work” portion, your church will follow your lead and do the same. However, if you do the work, sacrifice and lead the way, your church will do likewise! Dr. John C. Mawell, founder of INJOY Stewardship, has famously stated, “Everything rises and falls on leadership.” It’s a truth you can take to the bank – literally.

Here are some questions every church leader should ask about their leadership ability:

1. When I share vision with my leadership team, do they gladly embrace it?
2. If ten random church attenders were asked about the vision of the church, would they be able to accurately quote and share it?
3. Are new leaders showing up because the vision has compelled them to move “all-in” to support it?
4. Are my leaders fully engaged – with their time, talent, and money?
5. Am I continually identifying and raising up new leaders?
6. Do I have a “leadership pipeline” clearly defined and in place to develop new leaders?
7. Am I allowing poor leaders to have influence over the vision?

The stakes couldn’t be higher. The leaders around you will determine your altitude.

To fund the vision God has given you for your church, it is important to understand why people give. We have found that there are five basic reasons that an individual will give money to an organization.

 1.    Relationship

People will give money to a larger organization because of the relationship they have with the people there. If a person participates in a small group and are connected with many relationships at your church because they volunteer regularly, they are much more likely to give money to the church because it is impacting them relationally.

 2.    Vision

Strong vision inspires people to give. Proverbs 29:18 (KJV) states: “without vision, the people perish.” Clear vision helps people understand the key next steps that God wants for your church and connects them to the amount of money it will take to be well-funded.

Be careful, however, because too often leaders are told that people give to vision and vision alone. Vision is vital, but it is not the only reason people give.

 3.    Need

We have heard it said that “people give to vision, not to need.” This is simply not the case! When the enormous tsunami struck Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and several other nations on December 26, 2004 and killed 250,000 people, the outpouring of giving was unprecedented. When Port-Au-Prince, Haiti collapsed in an earthquake on January 12, 2010, people gave in an incredible way!

People will give to need. Express a need clearly and show them how addressing it will help the church accomplish its mission. People will give.

4.    Obedience

Many people give because they are living lives that are obedient to God’s Word. They understand that God is an incredible giver (He gave His only Son!), and they are grateful to have been blessed with some money. You can build a city-shaking, life-impacting ministry when you have a group of people living their lives in obedience in this way!

5.    Education

People give because they have been educated about what God’s Word says about money, and they have been taught practical tools that helped them put their desire to give into action.

The vast majority of people want to give, but sadly, many people have not been taught how to manage their money well. As a result, they have pledged away all of their money (or maybe a little more) to the lender. It is important to educate people on God’s principles of money management and to teach practical ways to put Scriptures regarding money into practice.

Ask people in your church the question, “Why do you give?”
